Cannings Free Range Butchers in Melbourne serves the finest, ethically farmed and sustainable meat and seafood. We’re talking about grass fed beef and lamb, true free range pork and chicken, and sustainable (not over fished) seafood. We've chosen to source our produce as locally as possible because we understand the impact food miles have on our environment. Additionally if we can visit the farms ourselves then we can ensure the animals are being treated with respect and dignity.

OUR PHILOSOPHY & ETHICS:

1. EVERYTHING WE SELL IS FREE RANGE

When you shop here, you don’t have to wonder whether your dinner was ethically farmed. It was! We don’t mess around here. Humane farming is so important. All our animals are TRUE free range, outside, cage free and happy animals, that have never been given growth hormones. Natural farming practices only thanks!

2. WE STOCK ONLY THE FINEST QUALITY, LOCAL PRODUCE

It’s taken us a while, but now, we feel like we have found the best suppliers possible for CANNINGS. All free range, outside animals. With lamb from Kyneton, chicken from Bendigo, pork from Wangaratta and beef from Gippsland, we can proudly say that all almost all of our meat is from Victorian suppliers, minimising ‘food miles’ and supporting the Victorian industry.

3. WE'RE A SMALL AND LOCAL BUSINESS

Unlike all the ‘big guys’, the owner of the shop is here everyday. We are not a chain or a franchise, so all of our passion and energy is focused on one place. CANNINGS in Hawthorn! If you ever feel like there is something we could do better… tell Sam!

4. WE ARE CARBON NEUTRAL

We recycle all of our cardboard, hard plastics and organic waste. We are using 100% renewable, green hydro power generated in Tasmania. We no longer use plastic carry bags and are phasing out polystyrene trays. We’ve chosen to use local, Victorian producers for most of our fabulous meats – minimising transport emissions or “food miles”.

5. WE MAKE EVERYTHING HERE

With the exception of a few high quality products that we couldn’t do better, we make all of our own products. Try our sausage rolls and our mango chicken puffs! We have our own smoke house and produce some of the finest smallgoods you will ever eat. Sam’s free range sausages are second to none and our home made, free range pizzas are pretty special also. We know what goes in EVERYTHING!

6. WE GIVE BACK TO THE ANIMAL KINGDOM

We donate to Animals Australia, Australian Marine Conservation Society & Human Society every month. We do this because these are the organisations, the people, who in a world that prioritises profits over welfare, growth over sustainability, efficiency over compassion, who else would look after the interests of the animals that so many of us take for granted? These people make big differences, and we support them. When you shop here, you also support their outstanding work.

7. WE REDUCE, REUSE & RECYLE

We are phasing out polystyrene trays in favour of small cardboard lunch boxes. Instead of using plastic carry bags, we’re using Cardia, fully compostable, biodegradable corn starch bags and Detpak, brown paper bags. Unlike plastic bags, these paper bags are not made from petroleum. They are 100% recyclable and sourced from trees that have been sustainably farmed, certified by the Forestry Stewards Council. Did we mention that all of our paper, cardboard, hard plastics, glass and organic (fat and bone) waste all get recycled? We have offset our carbon footprint through Carbon Neutral. Our offsets are bio-diverse conservation tree plantings that not only sequester carbon emissions, but also help re-vegetate rural Australia and restore native flora and fauna.
